Hiking

Steamboat Springs and its spectacular alpine surroundings offer hiking trails for any age and fitness ability.  Go on a hike for an hour or spend your whole day exploring.  steamboat springs colorado hiking lodging

Hiking can be an easy, inexpensive way to appreciate the outdoors.  Just prepared with plenty of water, good comfortable footwear, sunscreen and appropriate clothing and get out there!

Here are a few ideas to get you started.  Once here, check out one of the many outdoor shops or local bookstores in town for additional hiking information and tips.  Or contact the local Forest Service office at (970) 879-1870.

A Few Favorite Area Day Hikes

Fish Creek Falls
This is a Steamboat local's favorite!  The 283 foot falls are accessible by a short, well-maintained path that descends only about 100 feet.  There is also an upper viewing area.  The hike to the second falls is more challenging, but well worth it for the great views over the Yampa Valley.  Hiking up to the second falls should take you about 1 1/2 hours (2 1/2 round trip).

Driving Directions: From Downtown, take 3rd street to Fish Creek Falls Road.  Follow to top and park at main parking lot for a $5 Forest Service parking fee.  Trailhead starts at the main parking lot.

Emerald Mountain
A great option if you don't have much time.  Hike just up to the historic Howelson ski jump platform to see what the ski jumpers see!  Or continue further and explore the many trails for views over downtown and the ski area that just keep getting better.

Driving Directions: Take 5th street to River Road and park for free anywhere near the softball fields.  Trailheads start to the right of the concessions kiosk and behind the Howelson Olympian Hall.

Rabbit Ears Pass
This can be one of the best wildflower hikes in the area.

Driving Directions: Drive East on US Highway 40 for about 30 minutes up to Rabbit Ears pass.  Park at one of the many marked trailheads.
